SALARY: $15.00 PE/R HOUR/32 HOURS PER WEEK
(Monday through Thursday)DESCRIPTION: The Legal Department Internship offers a hands-on opportunity to learn how local government manages legal processes and public administration. Interns will gain exposure to functions such as Open Records Requests, Tort Claims, workers’ compensation claims, and City Court procedures, including citations and warrants. Responsibilities include assisting with administrative and organizational tasks such as scanning and digitizing records, reviewing files to eliminate duplicates, supporting filing systems, and helping address warrant backlogs through outreach efforts.
Interns will also observe and shadow department operations, including municipal court sessions, court clerk procedures and public interactions, and the work of the City Clerk and City Marshal, with potential field observation opportunities. Additional experience includes observing city council, boards, and commission meetings while learning their structure, purpose, and open meeting requirements. This internship provides a well-rounded, behind-the-scenes look at how legal, court, and administrative functions support effective and transparent city operations.
QUALIFICATIONS: Applicant must be a part- or full-time student at a college or university. Applicant must have a high school diploma and at least 15 credit hours towards an associate or bachelor’s degree. Current transcript required.
